Mariko Sushi

Yet another one of the dime-a-dozen sushi restaurants that run along Bloor in the Annex. Fairly standard fare; very cheap; not very distinguishable from any other low-end sushi restaurants, but not terribly bad either.

Pho Hung

But not the stereotypical Pho Hung; this is the one on Bloor Street, which is surprisingly nicer in atmosphere than the usual Spadina fare... as well, it's considerably less... cramped. It was nice to blend in with all the student-types in there slurping their pho.... Mango shake was much smaller than the usual fare over at Green Train, but still very tasty...

Dairy Queen

OK, so we went to this one in downtown Brampton, and ended up eating an Oreo blizzard for dinner. However, it was gross in that my friend had a frozen fly in their otherwise supposed-to-be-normal raspberry sundae.... almost ate it, thinking it was raspberry leaf... well, they did get their money back, and a free sundae token... maybe it wasn't all that bad? Though I say it again: chain restaurants BAD!

Green Train

Yet another one of those we-go-here-all-the-time-but-I-haven't-yet-reviewed-it. I must admit, it makes good Vietnamese, all the more impressive since they've revamped their menu over the years. Though, my friend's vermicelli came out a liiiiittle too quickly, even faster than the pho... this time round, I just had a mango shake, which is still one of the finer ones around.

Cafe Pleaide

Had a lovely dinner on the Mt Pleasant strip.. went for the prix fixe menu. Starter was a non-gargantuan bowl of mussels, which was nice, for a change... sometimes, restos just have way too many mussels on their appetizer plate to keep it an appetizer.
This was followed by tilapia dressed with a grape tomato saue, which was very nice, capped by a store-bought (possibly Dufflet) chocolate meringue cake.
A dinner all the more pleasant, considering it took us hours to get through the courses... hosts were gracious, and not trying to beat us out the door. It's obvious that it's a treasured place to eat in the neighbourhood, as it seemed that almost all the other diners were regulars in the place...

Asian Legend

OK, so I've been here several times, but this was not my choice. It's one of the newer po-mo restos in Chinatown, I guess trying to cater to a more upscale crowd than would eat in some of the holes that are just a few doors down, I guess.
That being said, the food ain't bad. Certainly, who am I to be able to tell what is 'authentic' Schezuan or Cantonese cuisine?

Hanwoori

I find it very interesting at how trendy Korean food is becoming... the wave has been several years in the coming, but I just find it odd how often people want to go eat Korean, when I try to insist they should just ask my mom real nice if she'd cook for them...
So we dropped in here for lunch, in Koreatown north. Small menu, I think catering to those who think Korean food mainly consist of beef and beef ribs and other forms of beef (what? You mean it doesn't??). Had a traditional spicy fish stew, others opted for bi bim bap, etc.
I still think my mother can do better...

Pizzaiolo

A small franchise of pizza, along the lines of PIzza Amato (but we've all heard the problems they've been having...)... went to the one just outside OCAD. It's nice to go there for a late lunch on a Sunday; we were the only ones eating in, so had the slightly dingy, but spacious eating premises all to ourselves. Pizza was OK; good deal... only $5 for a BIG slice and a pop.... though not stellar pizza, like, say at Il Fornello (actually, even they aren't 'stellar', but at least it's not light-warmed pizza reheated in the oven and served on styrofoam)... Had a slice of pesto/chicken/red pepper pizza, which was passable... marginally better than Pizza Pizza...

Queen Mother Cafe

This is a rather large cafe on Queen (I note rather large, as real estate is rather expensive on this stretch of Queen), where we stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner. Had the pad thai, as they were offering it. Ordered it 'hot' (as opposed to mild, or spicy). It was fairly run-of-the-mill pad thai, though it had just a bit more tamarind edge than the usual sweet sauce used on most pad thai, so that was definitely in its favour. Had a disturbingly large number of pictures of the Queen Mother over the course of her lifetime throughout the restaurant, but otherwise, an OK place to eat.
