Grand's Seafood Restaurant

This is a Chinese restaurant owned by the father of a friend of mine in Old Chinatown (yeah, -that- one, not Spadina)... went for dim sum... had the usual, though I must say that their char sui bao was much tastier than the usual fare...

The Extreme Pita

OK, so this was in a food court at Yonge and Eg, but we were in a rush to catch a film (NOT a movie)... had a falafel and a V8 (I know, I know: 3 servings of vegetables in a can!). It was fine, tasted good, and (which I didn't notice until after I had ordered it; there was a 'nutritional information' signboard right beside the cash... I should've gotten the grilled chicken!) actually not so healthy for me.... bah!

The Green Bean

OK, so technically this is a cafe in downtown Oakville, and we only had dessert and tea, but still, it is impressive in that: it's independent, and not a conglomerate. Also, it was tasty cheescake. Also, I had some rooibos tea, that (which was nice, but didn't really make sense to me) was served in a crazy Central Asian teapot, and a Moroccan tea cup.

Yonge Street Grille

This is actually a hotel restaurant that we went to go eat in. Ambience was much like many other hotel restaurants; nice cloth napkins, well dressed waiter, but still that look of general steak-house. Had the salmon, which was a titch on the dry side, but otherwise OK. They did give us an enormous bread basket, with four different types of bread, which was (greedily) devoured, especially their jalapeno bread... yum...

Oriental Century/Dragon Dynasty and something else

Chinese banquet stuff... same stuff as at all other places... still really like crab claws, though won't be able to beat Mike's count... rarely can eat anything by the time we get to lobster, let alone noodles...

urban

Emerging onto the upper patio of a post-modern decor restaurant on King W is a pleasant surprise: violets entwining the trellises of the second floor.... we happened to score a walk-in Summerlicious dinner, where we regaled on goat cheese tarts, a rack of ribs the size of Portugal (no parsley munching here, Loos) with an undercooked toasted pine-nut and rice pilaf, finished by a (very ghetto) creme brulee.... pretty good deal... funny how I haven't had the same experience as -some- with these festivals...

York Street Kitchen

Facing the river in Stratford, this is a little 'home cooking' restaurant. Had (!more!) sangria, which had fresh Ontario strawberries, so that was bonus points for them. Ordered a vegetarian shepherd's pie, which was admittedly, a little disappointing. They had some excellent sandwiches that they had listed, but apparently they were only available as take-out, which we didn't know until we already been seated... oh well...

Tim Horton's

Admittedly, this was just a road stop for food, but I should mention: They make good bread for their sandwiches. And, of course, there is always the quintessential donut...

The Works

Just had to throw this in: Still the gold standard....

Rockin' Johnny's Diner

Off the highway in the east end of Ottawa, this establishment has been there for ages... the typical looking diner with the chrome finish, jukeboxes, etc.... went for brekkie with a friend... got oatmeal and fruit, mainly because I hadn't eaten fruit in over 24 hours by the time I got there... can't complain about oatmeal or fruit...

Cambodian Village

Well, really, this was a Cambodian/Thai place, so, obviously, I ordered the pad thai. Not red, not ketchupy: two points. However, sauce was brown (almost... ahhhh!!!! beef based???). But everybody else seemed to enjoy it...

Tango

This is a hip martini bar/bistro in Kingston. However, I was a bit mystified if that was really true; certainly, the decor screamed: "I'm hip! I'm cool! I'm post-modern!". Yet, there were older (balder, fatter) people there, noshing on dinner. And they carded me! I was probably old enough to be the doorman's babysitter!

Sol Latino

Downtown Kingston's Latin American cuisine at its (supposed) finest. Though, admitted, I did have a chicken breast with mole sauce, which actually was quite good... though maybe it was the five glasses of sangria that did it...
